Synopsis Family Portraits is a tapestry of stories, images, and traces that reveal a past that merges with a present perceived on a shifting surface and a heavy sky about to fall. Perhaps this is not entirely true. So it is a family album that may well come up against the ruined walls of a Roman cemetery. But the light and temperature can demarcate a social environment, a civitas attentive to the upheavals and inequalities that situate and condition us.

More than 400 images and succinct articles written by specialists make up this book, which is read in laughter and causes addiction; where even the most rigorously documented texts are crossed by the cramp and breakdown produced by the life and work of this great international artist.

Within the framework of documenta 15, a five-year exhibition of international contemporary art, eight publishing houses from around the world have cooperated to offer this volume that brings together voices from different latitudes that, through writing, explore the experiences of being-in-common in their respective contexts. These pages narrate the individual sacrifice that militancy demands; the nostalgia for a way of life interrupted by war; the whirlwind of temporalities that the collective memory of slavery can produce when invoked by textuality; but, above all, the festive spirit that the gathering of bodies, rhythms and energies with a view to a common benefit produces. This is a collective book, as is any vital experience worth living.

Synopsis The stories in this book speak, with great naturality, about important and fundamental moments in the History of Mexico during the XXth Century. From the most common and daily lives, the characters, made out of flesh and bone, question their very existence and subjects such as love, sexuality and corruption. The language shows us a way in which Neoliberalism settles in the politics of the country. This way, the author achieves an attractive volume of stories that reflects a crucial stage of the development of the nation, without forced lessons or moral subtexts, but only using the historical context as a background that creates a notable balance between literature and history.

Synopsis In the same year, 1810, two sublime piano composers were born: Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann. Since his childhood, the former suffered from a lung disease that would follow him throughout his short life, while the latter, already an adult, developed a psychiatric disorder that would condemn him to die alone in a sanatorium for the mentally ill. Their paths crossed once, and they performed their own and each other's pieces on the piano. Their lives and, perhaps, their extraordinary musical creations cannot be fully understood without knowing their medical histories, which are recounted here.

Synopsis The discovery of literature written in cuneiform came as a huge surprise, as it contained precursors to several biblical books. This book highlights this in the subtitles of two of the four works it includes: the Atra-hasis is a Babylonian Genesis, and the three separate dialogues are reminiscent of the wisdom books of the Bible. These subtitles are not merely a marketing ploy aimed at the general public, for the intention is not to capitalise on a similarity but to establish a genuine precedence: the Bible drew upon Akkadian sources, which in turn drew upon Sumerian sources.

"Vote for the Lion", by Antonio Malpica and Javier Malpica, is a funny comedy that starts when the animals of the jungle decide that the king is no longer useful, that the ruler must be changed; "Do you know how to whistle? "by Ulf Stark, is a tender story of extremes coming together: a boy and an old man adopt each other as grandfather and grandson; "Los sueños de Paco", by Carlos Corona, is a half humorous, half touching play that tells how a boy goes through the hard separation from his parents; finally, "Tokoloshe" is a nice South African play that tells how a little girl, even in the hardest adversities, can believe in magic, believe in a friend always ready to help. This volume is designed for professional or amateur theater groups, or for simple school plays. Each piece is preceded by an introduction and useful guidelines for staging with children.

Synopsis In Is There Life on Earth? Juan Villoro offers us a broad sample of his ability to analyze our present and manages to make sense of the untamed daily life when organized into a story. In these pages, the author analyzes the strange mystery of being Mexican, undertakes the arduous task of changing his mattress, develops a theory of mariachi, witnesses a confession by the Japanese writer Kenzaburo Oé, meets two turtles in the Dachau concentration camp, opens a suitcase that contains the pain of Republican exile, faces the enormous challenge of asking for a cappuccino and is mistaken for a priest. With Is There Life on Earth? Almadía reached one hundred published titles. Therefore, it was only logical to celebrate with a volume made up of one hundred stories characterized by addictive prose and a hilarious catalog of paranoias, misunderstandings, annoyances and illusions that make up daily life. Seven years after its appearance in our publishing house, and after the publication of two hundred other titles, we are pleased to see that Is There Life on Earth? remains one of the most sought-after titles in our catalogue, which shows us that there are and will continue to be new readers willing to search for the forms that life takes on Earth.

Synopsis It is necessary to stop understanding the person as a thing that has the capacity to say “I”. A person is not a natural thing or a decree, it is not a substance but a relationship. “A person is something that laughs,” writes Yolanda Segura. Who laughs, what laughs? This book is important, because in it Segura has taken the concept of a person (inaccurate, contradictory and insufficient) and has taken it to a universal code, showing us the intelligence of poetry activated by the lucidity of its discernment. She scrutinizes, sniffs and investigates the inside/outside of what we are, that being, individual, subject or similar and its multiple connotations and imaginaries. We must look carefully: What does the author collect? What has she decided to record? Persona is an extraordinary book, and not only in Mexican poetry, it is a novel, documented and deeply thought-out meditation. We know that there is no discipline that can provide conclusive results on the person/non-human person problem and that is why we need to go further: to poetry as an intuitive and instinctive vision, as a cosmic idea, unify yourself. If person is an incomprehensible hybrid that even surpasses the status of what we are used to calling “the human,” what defines us? Where do we live? Where are the signs of what we are? Synopsis The image of Patti Smith appears here as a symbol that defines what the three protagonist women (a Mexican, a Spaniard and a Uruguayan) have in common, starting with the physical resemblance to the music icon and the projection of the poet's rebellious and loving nature. The search of the characters in Picnic is not moved by a romantic vision, but by a desire to take from life what it owes to a girl: a little sex without falling in love, participating in a rock concert brawl getting out unscathed, or live as a functioning alcoholic without being judged.

Synopsis This book combines theoretical and practical elements to explain the phenomenon of art. Students, teachers and specialists in the field will find concepts such as ‘surface-object’, painting, basic and graphic surfaces, crafts and object and spatial designs. According to the author, art cannot be understood if the context in which the work arises is left aside, since its virtues and shortcomings are omitted, and it is impossible to consider those elements that transform art for the benefit of our Latin American reality.

Synopsis Two of the public's favorite composers, Tchaikovsky and Puccini, die in the midst of their creative stage. The former passes away days after the premiere of his Sixth Symphony (Pathetique), giving rise to controversial theories on the cause of death —cholera or suicide?—, a dilemma that we try to elucidate here. Puccini, in turn, survives a serious automobile accident, to die years later in an emergency hospital in Belgium, far away from his homeland and friends, without finishing his last opera: Turandot.

Synopsis At first glance, reading is a simple action: all you have to do is turn the pages while your gaze deciphers the signs written on them. But reading is also a fantastic act: it allows you to discover other thoughts and experiences, to imagine other worlds. There is something about reading that feeds the passionate obsession of the reader; unraveling the words of books transforms life. In this brief essay that plays with narration and poetry, Luna Miguel tells us how the Reader reads during the summer. Ferociously advancing through books that she finishes in days, or taking weeks to read others, she discovers that there is a relationship between the desire to read and her coquetry. It is no longer about finding out why one reads and what it is for, but about heroically abandoning oneself to the act of reading itself and giving oneself over to excess as if it were an adventure. Wearing a pink bikini or topless under the sun, the Reader seems to give up the idea that one reads in the ascetic solitude of the mind. One reads with others, with lovers and friends; Reading requires, above all, the awakening of all the senses and their pleasures.

A Mexican lawyer, politician, writer, educator, civil servant and philosopher, Vasconcelos wrote essays and treatises throughout his life that give an account of his thinking, which evolved from an idealistic spirit to a tortuous one, always endowed with luminosity.

Synopsis It could be that Gente del mundo is merely a residue, a ruin, what remains of a myriad of civilizations. A handful of short texts, where in a crucial gesture a whole culture is sketched. A collection of illustrations that produce an allegoric image of an entire population. Alberto Chimal is Calvino’s and Borges’ best reader of the latest years because instead of admiring them in quote form, he focuses on reimagining. In an environment oversaturated with fidelity to the press, this book shows up and refreshes the literary scene.

THEMA True stories of heroism, endurance and survival
Synopsis Ten years ago some friends shared their fuck-ups and a few beers in Mexico City and discovered how powerful it can be to learn from it. Today Fuckup Nights has become a movement that investigates, make questions and redefines failure and has given more than 15,000 of his stories to more than 1,200,000 people in 185 cities and 62 countries, hand in hand with hundreds of companies that seek to build more innovative organizational cultures. After a decade of analyzing hundreds of stories, the four founders of Fuckup Nights and the Failure Institute share with us what they have learned about failure: its origins in our culture, how capitalism and its cult of individual success foster the taboo, what factors and behaviors that trigger it, what are its signs, how it impacts our emotions, how to communicate it to your team, which consolations rituals you can add to your routine, what anti-failure tools to use and how to use them, and what conclusions this community of rebels has reached. The book is enriched with stories of iconic failure that have gone through Fuckup Nights internationally. It also includes revealing anecdotes from within the movement that tell of their own defeats, but also of its evolution. Join the movement, laugh at your failures and share them with the world! #ShareTheFailure

Synopsis With great force and a very particular violence, Liliana Colanzi places the reader on the threshold of several worlds: the earthly and the fantastic, science fiction and indigenous idiosyncrasy, memory and nightmare. Making her stories mechanisms in which rural songs and testimonies of ethnographic studies operate, the Bolivian author constructs atmospheres in which there is always a longing - whether for home, childhood or even our planet - that is the product of the encounter with that which seems foreign to us, but where what is longed for contains at the same time illness and poverty, mystery and death. Thus, the magic of exoticized Latin America is replaced by the crudeness of the Colony and extractivism, by fanaticism and superstition. A woman on a colonization mission on Mars, someone waiting for her lover in a Paris hotel, a young man possessed by the murderous impulse of a Mataco Indian, are some of the characters that inhabit these stories, in which fantasy dissolves into terror and suspense. With this collection, the reader has the opportunity to witness the emergence of one of the most powerful voices from the south of the continent on the Mexican literary scene.

Synopsis Which room? Which hotel? The readers of this round and intriguing book will ask themselves; a book whose simple strokes and complex effects recall the watercolors that integrate into the whiteness of paper to transmit the surprise of the work of art. The room is oneself; the room is the world; it is memory or identity; or it is, in fact, a hotel room, or a hospital room; or a country. Whatever the answer or the sum of answers is, this book is an allegory of our fleeting nature and of the temporary condition of a repeatedly warlike and wrecked world.
