| Synopsis | In La maquinaria del poema. Poesía y materialidad en México, we set out to rethink the materiality of poetry in light of what has been produced in Mexico during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Each of the essays that make up the volume explores and problematizes a different aspect of what we have chosen to call poetic materiality, a concept we prefer for its concreteness and its ability to unfold outward from or inward into the book. We are interested in what the poem is and what it does: its presence, the structures in which it is embedded, and the connections it generates—not merely what the poem says. We are interested in the conditions under which the poem—and, in turn, the book of poems—is produced; the movement of the writing process; the tools employed; the various materials brought into play; and the physical framework that shapes it. Ultimately, we are interested in awakening to the materiality of language, where the sign no longer reigns. |
