    THEMA Philosophy
Synopsis The present book embarks on a critical-conceptual history of the notion of life in the West. The different discourses around life (such as biology, ethics, politics, phenomenology and theology) characterize it by its capacity to be a cause and principle of itself. Hence, we can speak of a bio-political paradigm of autarky. This deconstructive analysis shows that if the characteristic of life and the living is its being referred to itself, then all contact and trade with the other is either accidental or anecdotal.

It is the description of different possibilities of existence with purpose and certainty in a world marked by provisionality and constant change. It is an invitation to change along with history, to evolve with circumstances, but without removing the finger from the line regarding what is worthwhile.

    THEMA Critical philosophy
Synopsis We will make an exception: for this book we will not talk about its themes or the authors with whom it dialogues, but rather its effects. Hidden within its pages is an invitation to live, think and position oneself from Latin America, which—in short—means nothing other than experiencing the crisis at all times. Latin America understood as a temporary, dynamic fact; a being-being that situates, but also transforms. Living in crisis is, then, presented as a fruitful option towards new modalities of consciousness. The route that we present here does not go through ideal concepts; in fact, it avoids the transcendental: it is on cultural consciousness and concrete experience (from the Latin concrescere, “grown by accumulation”) that the yeast of this book works. In the analysis of daily living/dying as a phenomenon, we are presented with a path towards that which is understood through the senses and not reason; towards what is prior to concepts and even to the acquisition of language: to what is involuntary/embodied memory. It is in the concrete and radical meeting of all these parts that a decolonial key is offered: time as a linear (and progress) structure that leaves everything behind, opens to simultaneous times that operate as a tool to situate Latin American consciousness in its pluriversality, in an ecstatic, simultaneous structure, open to affective and memorial dimensions in a being exposed in skin, heart and mind to what is different.

Their characters come close to embarrassment, ridicule, and always find a new way to fail. Here are outcasts trying to clone their pet because losing it seems unbearable, dead people who don't know they are dead, impossible couples, ruined trips... Convinced that these disasters should be told with the most representative voices involved, Villoro took the stories of his fellow earthquake survivors and built a concert of impressions that is not lacking in suspense or absurdity. “After reading this heartfelt and vibrant book, one might think that the author did not tell the whole truth: 8.8 was written with fear still in the skin, and perhaps in that secret lies its extraordinary power.” -Leonardo Tarifeño

Synopsis The subject of La modernidad de lo barroco connects with several keys of our being and our history. The spontaneous strategy of miscegenation on the American 17th Century outlined on Malinche’s double lie, the calculated Jesuitic behavior in the development of the “first modernity” of Latin America, Gracián’s and Leibniz’s “optimistic disenchantment” are some of the fascinating issues discussed here

Synopsis "This book offers a general introduction to the religions of Mesoamerica. It does not pursue an encyclopedic purpose, but rather demonstrates that, even in the age of academic hyperspecialization, comprehensive Mesoamerican studies are not impossible. A fundamental contribution of this new proposal is to promote concepts that do not come from theology and the history of religions but from indigenous practices themselves. Terms such as polytheism, cosmology, mythology, sacrifice and prayer should be questioned, if Mesoamerican religions are to be understood in their own relational logic."

Synopsis The Sun Stone was buried in the Plaza de Armas by order of the archbishop of Mexico City a few years after the Conquest. A similar fate befell the equestrian statue of Charles IV, known as El Caballito, which was originally mounted on the Plaza Mayor, but was placed in several other locations before arriving at Plaza Tolsá in 1979. In this book, archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma recounts the details of the pilgrimage of both sculptures in search of rest.

THEMA Biographical fiction / autobiographical fiction
Synopsis Ángel Gilberto Adame offers in this monumental work a sudden, splendidly documented account of the liberals in Mexico through the actions, disputes, publications and conflicts of Ireneo Paz, who, full of convictions and contradictions, exposed his ideals and his honor by participating militarily against the French invasion scorned by Victor Hugo; he vividly questioned the mandates of Juárez and Lerdo de Tejada; he sought the approval and brotherhood of Porfirio Díaz, whom he believed to be the stabilizer of the homeland; he yielded to the somber spell of Victoriano Huerta and, for him it was only, at the end of his days, the banquet of desolation. Siglo de las luces... y las sombras places Ireneo Paz as conclusively in the battlefield as in the duel where Justo Sierra's brother lost his life; in the founding of hardened newspapers as in the drafting of the Plan de Tuxtepec that elevated porfirism; in prison and condemned to death and in the macabre homage to poet Manuel Acuña. Adame's work is a playful and limpid inquiry that, with his usual dazzle, shares the twists and turns of Mexico's history during the 19th and early 20th centuries by tracing the course of a celebrated journalist of his time who defended his political positions immersed in recklessness, confrontation and error, while embodying the essence of the Mexican idealist wandering in the labyrinth of loneliness and violence of the convulsive Mexico of those years and desires.

Synopsis The world of indigenous women in the missions had remained practically unexplored until now. This book by Beatriz Vitar is the first synthesis on the subject, with an outstanding degree of erudition. The question of the body as a space for the exercise of power is presented as a cardinal node of reflection that allows us to identify phenomena of conflict, coercion, violence, resistance and negotiation where only an idyllic world of encounters had been seen.
