THEMA Biography, Literature and Literary studies
Synopsis José Vasconcelos is one of the most pain inducing writers in Mexican literature. These pages explore the reasons behind that pain. They build his biography based on moments in his life and work: his adolescence, the founding of the Ministry of Public Education, the 1929 electoral campaign, and the dark years that led him to defend Nazism. The book presents a mosaic of texts, testimonies, and memories from several generations who participated in Vasconcelism. It invites us to reflect on José Vasconcelos's lingering impact.

THEMA Children’s / Teenage general interest: Zombies, ghosts and the undead
Synopsis Although our fears have evolved as much as humanity has, what terrifies us most nowadays ar not ghosts, but environmental catastrophe, the economic crisis, deadly viruses and nuclear wars. Fears turn over ourselves, our destructive capacity and the limits of what is allowed because we are convinced that an optimistic perspective of progress is now incompatible with a viable future. More than ever, we need to look for evil in our actions and their consequences. Illness, aging and death constitute the most fearsome of the trilogies for human beings. These stories place us in the main characters' perspectives and awaken our survival instincts to remind us that the monster is just around the corner.

Synopsis Eating food prepared outside the home is a practice that has become increasingly important in the population's repertoire of food alternatives, especially in urban contexts. Latin America is a diverse and complex setting in which this practice shows converging changes and continuities, but also varies according to regional contexts, local identities, and exposure to global economic and cultural processes. This work brings together empirical studies that analyze the economic, cultural, political, spatial, and even socio-affective dimensions of eating out in cities in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru.

Synopsis The image of Patti Smith appears here as a symbol that defines what the three protagonist women (a Mexican, a Spaniard and a Uruguayan) have in common, starting with the physical resemblance to the music icon and the projection of the poet's rebellious and loving nature. The search of the characters in Picnic is not moved by a romantic vision, but by a desire to take from life what it owes to a girl: a little sex without falling in love, participating in a rock concert brawl getting out unscathed, or live as a functioning alcoholic without being judged.

Synopsis In Hukuméiji, a town located in the north of Colombia, near the Don Diego River and the Caribbean Sea, the characters in the four stories that make up this novel are stripped of parts of their body—their tongue, hands, legs, eyes—they suffer the death of their loved ones, and they have even been stripped of their land or crops; that is, they suffer the mutilation of the different parts that make them up. Thus, the body becomes a system to explain loss, so that the author weaves a writing that embodies the pain and ravages of violence exercised by power anywhere in the world. Likewise, nature—present in the stories through the jungle, plants, crops, or torrential rains—links human bodies with the territory: violence is executed on bodies and land in an analogous way. If, as journalist Ana Teresa Toro says, in Latin America “the body makes culture, the body thinks, articulates and gestures ideas, manifests history in a forceful way, it is not a mere consumer or a product, it is an idea and a concept”, El asedio animal participates in the current conversation that links, for example, the struggles of women and indigenous peoples with the care of the land and the protection of natural resources, as part of the same process that considers bodies – individual, collective, natural – as territories of resistance against an economic system that seeks to manage life, death, flesh and its desires.

Cracks through which the strange, the odd, the incomprehensible and the disturbing peek out. Las manos dormidas are thirteen stories that start from ordinary situations, but which at some point are distorted by the irruption of the unusual. Thirteen pieces of different puzzles. Synopsis 17 life stories of women tortured and imprisoned without trial, who lived under constant threat of execution in retaliation for attacks by extreme left-wing armed groups. Most of them were released only after the collapse of the military regime in 1983. Isabel Toro, also a prisoner for seven years, did not privilege the horror of the torture sessions, but tried to shed light on how a political context had influenced each one’s personal stories and what had been the key moments; how they and their relatives had lived and given meaning to this context and the events that had constituted their culminating instances.

Synopsis Sébastien is not alone, an anarchist is never alone. To say otherwise is pure propaganda. He is accompanied by Claudette, an actress at the Théâtre de L’Oeuvre, granddaughter of Claude Bernard, who was director of the Jardin des Plantes and granddaughter of her grandmother, who lost her name forever the day she married Dr. Bernard. Claudette smells of magnolia and earth, Sébastien lets the knife reflect the face of his beloved before carving on the bark of the beech tree: God is dead. Next week they will try again. In revolutions there is always a week to come, a year to come, a tomorrow.

Synopsis When the idea for The Eighth Plague began to float around in my head, one thing was clear: its protagonist would not be a conventional detective. I came from the world of journalism, where I trained as a writer for many years; the vicissitudes of reporters and the atmosphere of newsrooms were familiar to me, so it seemed like an act of congruence for Casasola to have that profession. However, I never worked in crime fiction, something I would have loved; having my journalist in charge of covering the police beat was a settling of scores: that, among other things, is what literature is for. I also knew that I wanted to mix genres: reality has never been enough for me to put together the stories I want to tell. Although it was a rarity in the tradition of detective novels, especially in the one made in Mexico, my novel would fuse a police plot with the supernatural. The Motel Killer, the fantastic entity that Casasola faces, behaves like a praying mantis: she decapitates her lovers during sexual intercourse. Finding out why she – and apparently the rest of humanity – acts like an insect is the subject of a mystery with apocalyptic overtones. But there was something else: Casasola had to look like me and, therefore, he would be an exile. He had to go from the culture section of the newspaper where he worked to the crime section: a universe unknown to both him and me. A path that we would travel and discover together. In the end, we had such a good time that The Eighth Plague became a saga. Mexico City is the ideal setting because, as we already know, in its streets and nooks and crannies the strange and chilling are part of the landscape. Do you dare to join us?

Synopsis In this book we will learn why we yield and under what circumstances to the most intense sexual desires; how childhood traumas are projected in our present; what uncontrolled laughter indicates if we go through a tragedy, a severe physical pain or a great sadness; what are the signs of a deep loneliness or a fear without limits that can lead to a chronic illness. El lado B de las emociones is a provocative work because it confronts us with lucidity and forcefulness about aspects that we fear, deny or simply hate. Eduardo Calixto reaches deep down to talk to us about our anger, resentment, shame, the result: a book with shocking explanations about our most sinister behaviors, the truth about perverse acts and, more than anything else, the keys to know our abysses, face them and fill them with light.

Synopsis Irene and Alberto are a young couple living in the city of Monterrey. Their perfect and stable middle-class life is turned upside down when the pregnancy they were so excited about is interrupted and they lose the child who would complete their happiness. But tragedies do not come alone, and a gang of thieves desecrates the couple's home. In a desperate and blind attempt to balance their lives, the protagonists will become the perpetrators and rob the thieves of a very precious possession. Then comes an escape along the roads of the north of the country. In these passages, the novelist offers beautiful and hallucinatory descriptions of the desert, its mountains, its vastness and its towns, until the moment arrives when each character confronts their deepest and most unspeakable feelings. This disturbing novel confirms Antonio Ramos as a first-rate narrator. It is a reflection on the nature of the human being, that being tormented by his desires, always determined to seek his happiness in the place that seems to be the least suitable. Antonio Ramos recently received the 2015 UANL Arts Award for his literary career.

Synopsis Hair Allegories is a journey through the aesthetic universe that unfolds human hair as a material for art in the work of Mexican artist Gabriel de la Mora. Through his vibrant prose, Rodríguez Blanco guides the reader from Walter Benjamin's concept of allegory to Jacques Lacan's category of the real, from Julia Kristeva's abjection to Mario Perniola's sex appeal of the inorganic. Hair is revealed as a sublimated artistic material, as a receptacle for repressed desires, and also as a catapult to sinister places of memory.
