Synopsis When this novel was published in 1949 it was the center of passionate arguments and accusations. In it, the well-known author of Dios en la tierra and Los muros de agua addressed the themes of class struggle with an introspective vision which, while being faithful to his Marxist militancy, questions deeply the “positive character” dogma by presenting characters with an inner life ridden with the contradictions of the human condition. Today this book appears intensely alive.

Synopsis I once had a company (I was the boss and had only one employee) dedicated solely to publishing a literary magazine. One of the things I did frequently was fill out power of attorney letters. At that time I went out to buy them at the stationery store, until one day it occurred to me to capture it on my computer and, when necessary, print it. Towards the end of 2007, in a moment of leisure, I reread that document that almost all of us signed without fully understanding the legal terms it contained (“dilatory and peremptory exceptions,” “auctions,” “interlocutory and definitive matters,” etc.) and I decided to compose a love “poem” with those words as a solitary game without the purpose of publication. In June 2008, I was invited to a writers’ meeting in San Luis Potosí. To conclude, we participants were asked to read something from our work. Each one would have a maximum of three minutes. Of course, the poets had plenty to choose from. A writer of short fiction could have read his complete work, but we, the narrators, were left defenseless. Then I remembered that the “poem” entitled Carta poder was on my computer. I transcribed it on a sheet of hotel letterhead and read it. Some of my colleagues liked the game and there was even someone who asked me to give them the manuscript. Back in Mexico City, I asked myself: And who is she, the recipient? From that question was born Poesía eras tú. Francisco Hinojosa

Synopsis In a village in the Spanish countryside, a house is shaking. The windows are slamming, the roofs are narrowing, the walls are slamming down on whoever crosses the threshold of the door. Inside, voices, scratches, cries, and furniture are heard. The house is crying out for things, it is hungry. Its inhabitants – a grandmother and her granddaughter – have learned to live with the shadows in the corners, with the beings hiding under the beds and the dead who arrive tired from crossing the mountain. Built with the money that the great-grandfather earned by prostituting women, the house is the heritage of a family that, along with the walls, has inherited resentment and rage. After the war that devastated the territory but kept the dynamics of power and social classes intact, this home protects while it suffocates. More than a refuge, the house is a condemnation, a curse from which one cannot escape. A place where resentment never stops drilling into the body and the perfect setting for them to cook up their revenge. With exceptional literary skill, Layla Martínez has told a story that is already a literary event in Spain and several other countries. Venturing into terror, Carcoma touches our deepest sensibilities to awaken fear and the bittersweet memory of family ties. While placing gender and class violence in its proper dimension as authentic horror stories, it reminds us that love, hate and trauma are also inherited through blood.

A Mexican lawyer, politician, writer, educator, civil servant and philosopher, Vasconcelos wrote essays and treatises throughout his life that give an account of his thinking, which evolved from an idealistic spirit to a tortuous one, always endowed with luminosity.

Synopsis People of African descent, who came enslaved from Africa, were present in our territories from the very beginning of the conquest. Many were able to gain their freedom, others remained enslaved. They were also protagonists of the different processes of Independence that began to be experienced after 1810. Although historiography tends to take away the visibility of their presence, they are still there, and their existence brings us back to a series of questions that allow us to recover the original complexity of those events.

Synopsis Why do we not demand greater redistribution in countries with such high levels of inequality? Drawing on surveys, interviews and original experiments, the authors show how perceptions of inequality, social mobility, taxation and merit shape our preferences and, ultimately, fiscal policy. Mexico is the central case study: a society that recognises inequality, distrusts the government and wants those who have the most to pay more, but which at the same time overestimates its social mobility and makes its support conditional on the tax contributions of the elites.

Synopsis A total ethnography, which finds in debts and in law two great operators of social life. In it, the author breaks down the modes of operation of collective law by showing procedures, rituals, coercive measures and sanctions. It is a living law that reinterprets and completes written law and has an effective way of functioning: it generates obligations. Here, living law is articulated with living debt, modulating a collective order full of precariousness, but also of solidarity, risk and protection.

Synopsis The 20th century saw, as never before in history, the intensive devastation of ecosystems coupled with the advance of technology and industry, as well as a significant development of the means of communication and transport. It was faced with war conflicts and the conquest of space. It was in this century that various voices also began to seriously question human activity on the planet and its place in nature. The so-called “school of suspicion” – Nietzsche, Marx and Freud – bequeathed to the contemporary world a series of doubts and questions that forced us to rethink both anthropology and human praxis. Wars, resistance to colonialist and imperialist projects, terrorism and financial crises were recurring scenarios in a century that, while taking humanity to unsuspected levels of development, also showed human cruelty and constant coexistence with evil. The philosophers of the 20th century sought to find new answers, new points of support in the face of the collapse of tradition. For this reason, perhaps in response to the difficulties experienced, the past century was a century of great philosophical contributions and in these the animal question did not go unnoticed. The third volume of this collection offers a tour of some of these proposals, specifically those of Edmund Husserl, Martin Heidegger, Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, Tom Regan, Giorgio Agamben, Peter Singer and Martha Nussbaum.
