    THEMA literary essays

Synopsis A shadow walks through the streets of Mexico City's historic center. Through rites of dark magic, this presence invokes the energies that have been absorbed by the city's old facades throughout its history. Patient and furtive, this Necromancer plots revenge against the one who has condemned his name to oblivion. Thus, his plan seeks to put an end to a duel that dates back to the last days of the conquest and on whose outcome depends the permanence of the Mexican capital and all who inhabit it. After a long season lost in the past, Casasola manages to find a way to return to our present. In turn, thanks to powerful amulets and messages carved in the bronze of the statues, he is made aware of the destiny of chaos and destruction that has always loomed over what was the Great Tenochtitlan. With the help of a restoration architect whose legacy is limited to his father's old library, and allies lost in time, the hardened journalist will have to face forces he never suspected he would face. In the fifth installment of the acclaimed Casasola Saga, Bernardo Esquinca's personal obsession with Mexico City returns with greater intensity than ever, now in the form of multiple scenarios for its complete annihilation.

Synopsis "Por amor a mí is a wonderful work that addresses in a brilliant, entertaining, fun and interactive way the concept of love as a feeling, the content of emotions and how transcendental it is in our lives. With wonderful prose, kind to our concepts and that makes us reflect, reading Por amor a mí is a beautiful journey through the physiology and psychology of love, it is an invaluable work, without precedent." Eduardo Calixto

"Por amor a mí is a wonderful way to remember that self-love is the first step to heal emotionally and love what we do with intensity. A work full of wisdom that, in a simple and practical way, will positively touch your life." Dr. César Lozano

"Por amor a mí is a book of consultation and work to stop feeling the emptiness of someone else and value our presence in life. Alma Lozano is a feminine voice, fresh, spontaneous and very prepared, who questions paradigms and replaces them with self-pity." Gaby Perez Islas

"Por amor a mí by Alma Lozano, more than a book, is that piece of the puzzle that we were missing to understand the painful, it is that answer we were looking for so much when we were asked: 'And what happened to you?', but above all, it is that necessary information to learn to love the most important person, the true companion of your darkest days: you. This book taught me that it's not always okay and that's okay." Yordi Rosado

Synopsis One cold, wet afternoon, after leaving work at the Ciudad Láser beauty center, Soledad prepares to return home, but never arrives at her destination. Giselle Horn, a detective about to retire, descends into the depths of a city that has forgotten its people, to follow the trail of someone who took a deep secret with him. Meanwhile, Raúl, her boyfriend, finds himself dragged into an existence darkened by guilt. As the investigation progresses, Soledad's absence pushes Horn to delve into his own past to find the answers, because in a reality where nothing is what it seems and the illusion of freedom consumes itself, sometimes it is necessary to retrace steps to unravel the mystery. On the borders of the noir novel, Ciudad Láser is a current x-ray of the corruption, machismo and perversion of desires that surround us. But above all, it is a truncated love story, where desire, and the lack that fuels it, tumble into a spiral of violence overshadowed by a disappearance.

Synopsis I once had a company (I was the boss and had only one employee) dedicated solely to publishing a literary magazine. One of the things I did frequently was fill out power of attorney letters. At that time I went out to buy them at the stationery store, until one day it occurred to me to capture it on my computer and, when necessary, print it. Towards the end of 2007, in a moment of leisure, I reread that document that almost all of us signed without fully understanding the legal terms it contained (“dilatory and peremptory exceptions,” “auctions,” “interlocutory and definitive matters,” etc.) and I decided to compose a love “poem” with those words as a solitary game without the purpose of publication. In June 2008, I was invited to a writers’ meeting in San Luis Potosí. To conclude, we participants were asked to read something from our work. Each one would have a maximum of three minutes. Of course, the poets had plenty to choose from. A writer of short fiction could have read his complete work, but we, the narrators, were left defenseless. Then I remembered that the “poem” entitled Carta poder was on my computer. I transcribed it on a sheet of hotel letterhead and read it. Some of my colleagues liked the game and there was even someone who asked me to give them the manuscript. Back in Mexico City, I asked myself: And who is she, the recipient? From that question was born Poesía eras tú. Francisco Hinojosa

In this way, numerous intertexts are evident, which also outline a rather explicit poetics and canon [...] It is through this type of procedures that D´Annunzio the novelist, whose imprint defines this book, avoids the structures of the classical novel that decades earlier had been established by Honoré de Balzac and Stendhal.

    THEMA policy
Synopsis New edition of a book that, in just over a year, has become a reference in the field of geopolitical analysis, with new materials on what happened around Iran, Turkey, Syria, Libya, the United States, Russia and China . We receive more information than ever, and yet it is also more conditioned than ever, since the constitution of a media oligopoly means that said information has a clear bias that serves the interests of its owners. And this fact is reflected with particular harshness in the field of politics and geopolitics, where the global vision of a world divided between "good" (neoliberals) and "bad" (everyone else) is continually hammered by television, radio and newspaper headlines. Hence, to understand our world well (and try to change it, now that we still have time), it is necessary to almost start from scratch. Such is the purpose of this book. Aimed at a young audience from 18 to 90 years old, its pages reveal the concepts, theories and protagonists that have shaped and shape the sociopolitical context that surrounds us. From cartographic projections to the Cold War, from "failed states" to "rogue states", from the United States to Afghanistan, from the Cold War to banks, it offers a panorama that will undoubtedly surprise the reader, since it does not completely match the “official version”. A pleasant and ironic text that, without losing rigor, is addressed to all the "skeptics, submissives and misfits" who do not agree with what the establishment dictates or with the supposed "truths" on which the "sad" reality is based. . And not only to those who are already aware of it, but to those who do not know it yet.

Synopsis It is necessary to stop understanding the person as a thing that has the capacity to say “I”. A person is not a natural thing or a decree, it is not a substance but a relationship. “A person is something that laughs,” writes Yolanda Segura. Who laughs, what laughs? This book is important, because in it Segura has taken the concept of a person (inaccurate, contradictory and insufficient) and has taken it to a universal code, showing us the intelligence of poetry activated by the lucidity of its discernment. She scrutinizes, sniffs and investigates the inside/outside of what we are, that being, individual, subject or similar and its multiple connotations and imaginaries. We must look carefully: What does the author collect? What has she decided to record? Persona is an extraordinary book, and not only in Mexican poetry, it is a novel, documented and deeply thought-out meditation. We know that there is no discipline that can provide conclusive results on the person/non-human person problem and that is why we need to go further: to poetry as an intuitive and instinctive vision, as a cosmic idea, unify yourself. If person is an incomprehensible hybrid that even surpasses the status of what we are used to calling “the human,” what defines us? Where do we live? Where are the signs of what we are? Surely, we know that the investigation can only take place in the work with language. (Carla Faesler)

Francisco Cuetzpalómitl, or Lizard Bones, a survivor of the war of conquest, commissions a very special codex from a painter of codices. The work will demonstrate to the Spaniards who are the true owners of the lands that the defeated Mexica nobility intends to appropriate. Things get complicated when the codex is stolen. Synopsis From bloody martyrdoms to saints’ lives, religious stories became tools of power, shaping minds and legitimizing obedience. Antonio Rubial analyzes how these narratives tied Christian values to patriarchy and justified violence. With insight, he shows how these discourses, full of spectacle, forged alliances between Church and State and still shed light on social dilemmas we face today.

This approach is used today in many medical schools because of its ease of use and its proximity to specialised fields such as clinical and surgical medicine. The book includes an International Anatomical Terminology, which is now a prerequisite for medical students, as well as infographics. These resources encourage learning and make it possible to identify progress in the study of the human body.

In recent decades, there has been a keen interest in the relationship between biblical interpretation and decolonizing thought. This work aims to join this conversation in the task of decolonizing the reading of the Bible from its exegetical and hermeneutical presuppositions, from the so-called "Epistemologies of the South."

Synopsis “Any unhappy life can always become a hell,” Amparo Dávila once said in a story. La Compañía, by Verónica Gerber Bicecci, looks at this warning from its mirror: “any bonanza can always become an unhappy life,” by rewriting one of the most famous stories of the Zacatecan woman. As a premonition, this story reveals the psychological, environmental and social consequences that extractive projects produce in the territories where they are located. With photographs, diagrams, testimonies, reports and interviews, as well as elements of La máquina estética by the Zacatecan visual artist Manuel Felguérez, La Compañía reconstructs the history of Nuevo Mercurio, Zacatecas, a town where an abandoned and ruined mine haunts the collective memory. Writing appears here as an extractive gesture: a formal and conceptual exploration of the processes of dispossession involved in contemporary mining. This book avoids any precise classification and confirms that there is no category that suffices to describe the work of Verónica Gerber Bicecci: rewriting, photography, narrative, chronicle, fantastic story, science fiction. Writing appears here as a critical, formal and conceptual exploration of the processes of dispossession involved in contemporary mining. The Company haunts our present and embodies that monstrous creature that confronts us with the difficult question about the future.

Synopsis The Cricket is a story about music, colors, and dreams. A cricket plays his violin from the sky, next to the clouds and stars, but also in the park, near people's homes. His music is the flow of imagination. Told among wonderful illustrations by Mexican artist Gabriel Pacheco, this book—where stars have bodies and are transported on fish that live in the air or on land—introduces children to a poetic space that underlines the importance of dreams and invites us to think about the fleeting nature of all living things.

Synopsis This is a selection of the most frequently told legends of ghostly apparitions from all over Mexico. Some of the legends are the product of the author's many travels throughout the country: demons, weeping women and ghosts come to life in abandoned houses, haciendas, convents and churches, theatres, tunnels and cemeteries, lakes, rivers and uninhabited areas. These places, because of their antiquity, their state of ruin or their silence, are the ideal setting for the creation of stories of mystery and terror such as those that the reader will find in this book.
