Synopsis In August 2003, I made one of the most important decisions of my life: moving from Guadalajara to Mexico City. I was fleeing a marital breakup. I thought the change of scenery would give me distance and perspective on my situation, but it ended up giving me something more vital: a stimulating environment for creation, for a type of narrative that I had been exploring, linked to the supernatural and police, but which found an ideal setting in Mexico City. Friends and editors began to ask me for stories for supplement magazines; without intending to, I had a volume of stories in progress. When I reviewed them, I realized another unplanned factor: the protagonists of my stories were widowed or separated men. It was clear that I was looking to exorcise my divorce through horror literature. The equation seemed valid to me, so I decided to complete the book with that approach. The result was Los niños de paja, a project that marked the beginning of my close relationship with Almadía publishing house. The forensic entomologist in “The Secret Life of Insects” rejects science and tries to solve his wife’s murder with a medium; the writer of “The God of the Pool” travels to paradise to discover the greatest atrocity that a group of married couples can commit, and the heartbroken man in “Love Has No Cure” puts himself in the hands of a fortune teller in search of a miracle that will save his relationship. All of them, along with the rest of the beings that inhabit the nine stories included in these pages, have one objective: never turn their backs on darkness, but embrace it; throw themselves into the abyss and explore it, because reality is as banal as it is unbearable. Time passes and I still agree with that premise. Bernardo Esquinca

Synopsis This is a selection of the most frequently told legends of ghostly apparitions from all over Mexico. Some of the legends are the product of the author's many travels throughout the country: demons, weeping women and ghosts come to life in abandoned houses, haciendas, convents and churches, theatres, tunnels and cemeteries, lakes, rivers and uninhabited areas. These places, because of their antiquity, their state of ruin or their silence, are the ideal setting for the creation of stories of mystery and terror such as those that the reader will find in this book.

Synopsis It is necessary to stop understanding the person as a thing that has the capacity to say “I”. A person is not a natural thing or a decree, it is not a substance but a relationship. “A person is something that laughs,” writes Yolanda Segura. Who laughs, what laughs? This book is important, because in it Segura has taken the concept of a person (inaccurate, contradictory and insufficient) and has taken it to a universal code, showing us the intelligence of poetry activated by the lucidity of its discernment. She scrutinizes, sniffs and investigates the inside/outside of what we are, that being, individual, subject or similar and its multiple connotations and imaginaries. We must look carefully: What does the author collect? What has she decided to record? Persona is an extraordinary book, and not only in Mexican poetry, it is a novel, documented and deeply thought-out meditation. We know that there is no discipline that can provide conclusive results on the person/non-human person problem and that is why we need to go further: to poetry as an intuitive and instinctive vision, as a cosmic idea, unify yourself. If person is an incomprehensible hybrid that even surpasses the status of what we are used to calling “the human,” what defines us? Where do we live? Where are the signs of what we are? Surely, we know that the investigation can only take place in the work with language. (Carla Faesler)
