| Synopsis | Shaped by a male perspective focused on warfare and heroism, the recent history of Guatemala—a country marked by violence—has overlooked the role played by women in the brutal context of the Guatemalan civil war. Memorias de esperanza. Las luchas de las mujeres en la guerra civil de Guatemala is a work that, from a feminist and decolonial perspective, exposes the gender bias through which women’s memories have been rendered invisible and overlooked. Seeking to reread the “great heroic deeds,” Anelí Villa Avendaño challenges established paradigms surrounding the Guatemalan war and brings to light what traditional historiography has largely ignored. Through women’s memories, she makes visible the political subjectivity of those who worked to improve the living conditions of their communities—women whose everyday actions and activism sustained the social movements that challenged authoritarian governments and structures of power. |
