| Synopsis | This book brings together studies on the importance of images in the construction of identities, representations, and communities, while examining the role of the nation-state in shaping them. The authors focus on a close analysis of the ways in which painting, cinema, press graphics, and photography construct narratives of identity. The circulation of these images makes it possible to build bridges between regions and to consider whether there are convergences in the visual languages that have developed. The authors’ diverse backgrounds provide a broad overview spanning the history of nationalist representations from the nineteenth century to the late twentieth century, across geographical contexts including Mexico, Brazil, Spain, and France. Thus, this book constitutes a historiographical contribution that enables new readings of old images. |
