Synopsis To commemorate the seven hundredth anniversary of the death of Dante Alighieri, and as a tribute to the work on the poet written by Antonio Gómez Robledo, member of El Colegio Nacional, the essays gathered in this volume explore four aspects of Dante’s work: the Purgatory of the Divine Comedy, in which the philosopher Guillermo Hurtado highlights its character as a moral allegory; Dante’s Inferno compared and contrasted with the Mexica underworld by the archaeologist Eduardo Matos Moctezuma; two canzoni, studied and translated into Spanish by the poet Francisco Segovia; and the role played by De vulgari eloquentia, or Treatise on the Vernacular, in the poet’s intellectual “discovery” of his mother tongue and in his proposals for the creation of an Italian literary language, examined by the linguist Luis Fernando Lara. Seven centuries after his death, Dante, his thought, and his poetry remain fundamental pillars of Western culture.
