| Synopsis | The chaotic state of the political system over the past decade makes it more timely than ever to question the meaning of the fundamental concepts of politics: power, legitimacy, and democracy. This book seeks to understand the central element of politics—power—through a dimension of human existence whose relationship with power had never been fully recognized: human vulnerability. The meanings of legitimacy and democracy proposed here emerge from an interpretation of certain metaphors. But not just any metaphors: Hamlet and Whitman symbolize—one as tragedy and the other as ideal—what legitimacy and democracy have become in their current failure and contemporary distortion. Thus, I sought to find the meaning of legitimacy and democracy not so much in what their doctrines proclaim, but in what resonates in their earliest impulses and original gestures. |
