| Synopsis | As a form of labour exploitation and as a legal and political institution that deprived hundreds of thousands of people of African descent of their fundamental rights, slavery continued in Spanish America following the independence movements of the early 19th century. Abolition took place successively in those republics between 1820 and 1860 and reached Spain’s last Caribbean colonies, Puerto Rico and Cuba, between 1870 and 1886. This book recounts how more than 330,000 Black slaves came to be classified into various categories of freed persons following the abolition of slavery in Chile in 1823 and in Cuba in 1886. |
