Synopsis | Paraguay is the only country in the region whose entire borders come directly from its wars with all its neighbors. Located at the crossroads of the colonial borders of the former Portuguese empire, of the old Iberian viceroyalties, it suffered the two bloodiest international conflagrations of the continent in the 19th and 20th centuries. The first almost wiped it off the map in 1870; it emerged victorious, but exhausted, from the second, in 1935. The impact of these two wars on Paraguayan society has been extremely important, and retains an intense presence in today's social imaginary. |
