Synopsis | This book focuses on the configuration of musical practices in the city of Asunción del Paraguay during the colonial period. The indigenous musicians of the surrounding Indian villages -the “singing Indians”- became protagonists in the urban musical activity when they were transferred from the Jesuit reductions and Indian villages under the care of secular and Franciscan priests to Asunción for festivals and celebrations, promoting the circulation of knowledge and practices. Los indios cantores del Paraguay is the first social history of music in colonial Paraguay. |
